You're in the middle of a presentation in your hotel meeting room and a primary light source goes out. Who are you going to call? Engineering? Your convention services manager? At the Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport, one call does it all.
“My role is pretty unique to hotels,” explains Kimberly Stergiadis, executive meeting specialist. “I’m the liaison between the convention services team and planners. My job is to figure out what planners need and tailor my service to those needs,” whether it’s copy service, cappuccino delivered to your CEO every 30 minutes, or coming up with a new Spartan-themed prop for the financial planner with a passion for Michigan State University.
Since growing up on a farm near Frankenmuth and earning a degree in Hospitality Management from Grand Valley State University, Stergiadis’ entire career has been devoted to the hospitality industry. She spent seven years at the Dearborn Inn – a Marriott Hotel as a specialty restaurant manager and event manager before joining the opening team of the Westin eight years ago in the banquet division.
Although the executive meeting specialist position is Westin-wide, Stergiadis says each specialist is allowed to interpret the role according to their own style, or in Stergiadis’ case, to that of her clients. “I think my strength is my ability to adopt my personality to different styles and approaches, from our guests, to planners, to the front office manager, to the engineer on staff,” Stergiadis explains.
That style recently earned Stergiadis a ROSE (Recognition Of Service Excellence) Award from the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau this past August in the Hotels division. “Kimberly is just really proactive with our guests,” says Tina Hicks, human resources manager at the Westin.
“She’s very instinctive about their needs and sums up guest satisfaction. Many wrote in letters about her in support of her nomination.” Some of those letters were read aloud at the awards. “I was humbled beyond belief,” says Stergiadis. “To hear what people have expressed about you is priceless.”
