On Nov. 16, 20 MPI PHL members and myself had the pleasure of engaging with Temple and Drexel Hospitality and Tourism students in an information filled speed networking hour, aptly named Backpacks to Briefcases.
MIM+E held its 11th annual Best of Michigan party May 19 at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center in Detroit. Kurt Colone and Mike Staff Productions provided music and emcee services; event favorite Empty Canvas returned to provide entertainment; Shutterbooth made sure everyone got the chance to take a photo; Holiday Market served up delicious desserts and Top That! Event provided the décor.
The Event Professional Industry Class Awards were held April 5 at MotorCity Casino’s Sound Board. Kurt Colone of Mike Staff Productions was the emcee, with entertainment by the Dan Rafferty Band.
This weekend is the annual Uptown Art Fair. The three-day event features professional artwork in 12 different types of media, including ceramics, painting, jewelry and more. 350-plus artists from around the world will feature their artwork along Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue.
The Greater Detroit Chapter of the National Association for Catering and Events held its Table Top Wow! event October 21 at Andiamo Warren. The design competition included a strolling reception and silent auction to benefit Blessings in a Backpack.
The Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau honored more than 200 hospitality workers and volunteers at its 21st Annual Recognition of Service Excellence (ROSE) Awards on September 23 at the Detroit Opera House. WXYZ’s Glenda Lewis served as mistress of ceremonies, while the Rodney Lamar Page Band, Kurt J and Evelyn Renee provided entertainment.

Empty Canvas provided the entertainment; Kurt Colone and the team from Mike Staff Productions emceed and played music; Chateau Chantal provided a wine tasting table; SugarHigh Bakery delighted guests with a sweets table; and Emerald City Designs provided the floral arrangements and linens.
Event industry professionals gathered at The Henry, Autograph Collection on March 11 for the fourth annual EPIC Awards. The awards, a joint effort by ISES Metro Detroit Chapter, ABC Michigan and the Greater Detroit Chapter of NACE, recognized the best events and suppliers from the past year.
Planners and suppliers gathered at East Lansing’s Eagle Eye Golf in November for the 2014 Showcase of Ideas. The event, a partnership between VIKTOR and Event Garde, featured sessions on branding, contract negotiations and the 2015 ASAE Annual Meeting.
