In mid-July, about 30,000 young people descended on Detroit for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Youth Gathering at Cobo Center. For those of us who work downtown, the visitors were impossible to miss in their brightly colored t-shirts. Attendees are more focused, and the spaces’ relaxed atmosphere can help people open up. “You’ll get some of those people who you never hear from who will probably get more engaged in the conversation,” she says.
