Bay Pointe Inn

Michigan boasts many high-caliber, large luxury resorts. We can be proud of properties like the Grand Hotel, Shanty Creek Resorts, Mission Pointe, Crystal Mountain and so many others.

But our state also has its share of hidden gems – smaller properties with serene settings and strong attention to customer service.

Bay Pointe Inn in Shelbyville (that’s about 45 minutes southwest of Lansing) is a 38-room inn on the shore of Gun Lake. Owners Michael and Patti Powers bought the property – then a mansion – in 2003 and built the inn. Expansions and upgrades followed, including the construction of a lakefront pavilion that can seat 200.

I recently spent a night at Bay Pointe Inn. My room had a private balcony overlooking the lake and an in-room fireplace and Jacuzzi tub. I actually struggled to select which way to relax, not wanting to miss out on any of the options, so I bounced from balcony to overstuffed chair in front of the fireplace to lounging on the bed watching the wall-mounted flat-screen television. By 4 pm I was working on my laptop in the lakefront Terrace Grille while sipping a glass of Chardonnay. Dinner a few hours later was a flavorful and fresh walleye risotto. Throughout my stay, the inn’s staff couldn’t have been more attentive.

Bay Pointe recently bought a neighboring property and is in the midst of building the BoatHouse Villa, a 5,000-square-foot, four-bedroom space adjacent to the inn. We’ll highlight that expansion, slated to be completed this month, in our fall/holiday issue. But if you’re in the market for an intimate getaway venue for your next event, it’s worth checking out Bay Pointe Inn.
