Launching Your Own Planning Business

By M+E Staff

About eight years ago, I decided to strike out on my own as a self-employed writer and editor. I’d spent years as a journalist and a staff writer, and I was frustrated by the limits on my salary and the lack of flexibility in my schedule. So with no savings, a lot of debt and just a few dependable freelancing gigs, I quit my full-time writing job and set up shop in my apartment’s second bedroom.

Eight years later, I can’t imagine going back to an office job. But I also wouldn’t recommend my path to just anyone, at least not without a few cautionary pieces of advice. Don’t undervalue yourself, get ready to chase your money and be prepared to ride an income roller coaster.

I share all this because self-employed writers and planners have some things in common. We have to live with uncertainty, hustle for gigs and convince potential clients that we have professional skills that differentiate us from amateurs.

That’s why we’re devoting a whole feature in our fall issue to the in’s and out’s of launching your own planning business. Being a skilled planner is one thing; running a business is quite another.

Fortunately, we have plenty of successful planners in Michigan to tap for their insights. But before we do, we’d like to know what you what types of advice would be most useful. What are your most pressing questions about flying solo as a planner? And if you’re already on your own, what advice would you share?
