Cruise around greater Detroit and you’ll see plenty of promotion — from metro airport wall displays to highway billboards — spotlighting Motown as America’s greatest comeback city.
And, fortunately for meeting and event planners, the metro area’s tourism website also has evolved during these many years of economic rebirth and marketplace rebranding.
So it was good to see the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau staff all smiles this week after Skift named the visitdetroit.com website as one of the 25 best tourism board websites in the world for 2017.
Sarasota County will see the addition of 1,112 new hotel rooms over the next two years. These new accommodations will largely fall within walking distance of downtown Sarasota and the dining, arts and scenery that it offers.

1. What are you looking forward to the most in your new role as national sales manager?
Due to the growth in tourism and group bookings in the Lansing area, the Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Lansing Entertainment and Public Facilities Authority have partnered to assign the Lansing Center's future sales responsibilities to the GLCVB.
Chris Rowley, the Mount Pleasant Area Convention and Visitors Bureau's executive director, recently acquired her certification as a Government Meeting Specialist from the Society of Government Meeting Professionals .
The SGMP certifies employees of government entities through the voluntary GMS program whose goal is to teach planners and suppliers to plan meetings and events in the most effective way possible for their government employers. The program requires participants to fulfill the ethical, personal and professional requirements that the SGMP specifies.
Mary Zucchero is now Livingston County Convention & Visitors Bureau’s new executive director. Replacing Barb Barden, who retires after two decades of service, Zucchero will oversee the county's marketing operations and mission to promote the area's restaurants, shops and destinations to visitors beginning May 22.
Shortly after I took the helm of this magazine in 2012, I met Keri Kelp Dinica—then the president of Metro Detroit NACE—for coffee, where she explained a new awards program that the local chapters of ABC, NACE and ILEA had put together. The idea, she said, was to raise the profile of the events industry in metro Detroit and to raise the bar for it.
VisitPITTSBURGH has developed a fun promotional campaign to get locals more involved with its “Pittsburgh. Mighty. Beautiful.” theme and tagline. The organization kicked-off the “Mighty. Beautiful.” campaign and contest at its Annual Meeting luncheon by asking attendees to think of a third word to describe the city, e.g. Mighty. Beautiful. Welcoming. Among the words being used to describe Pittsburgh were: Inspiring. Proud. Reinvented. Welcoming. Legendary. Innovative.
