John S. Hernstat Jr. was recently hired as director of sales and marketing at Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa San Antonio, Texas.
1. What are you looking forward to the most in your new role as director of sales and marketing?
The thing I’m looking forward to the most is promoting this beautiful destination that has so much history and charm, and that’s coupled with this incredible and vibrant city. I’m also excited to work with an extremely seasoned and professional sales team who are passionate about the property and the San Antonio community.
2. How do you think past experiences have prepared you for this role?
Throughout my 25 years with Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, I’ve worked at properties in Lake Tahoe, Maui, New Mexico and Palm Springs. Each of those experiences taught me to honor what is authentic and true about a destination. Everything about Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa is genuine—it could not exist anywhere else—and I want to ensure we preserve its story and spirit, and carry it through in every interaction with our guests.
3. How did you get into the industry?
Nearly 25 years ago a friend of mine worked as a sales manager at Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, and he convinced me the sales department was the right field for me. I started out in food and beverage to get my foot in the door, and I didn’t stop until I reached the sales and marketing department. Two years later, I was a sales manager at the property, and I’ve never turned back. I love coming to work each and every day.
4. What are you hoping to achieve in your new role?
I want to achieve success at this award-winning property by continuing to build our business each year and by providing authentic and genuine experiences for our guests.
5. What do you enjoy most about the industry?
My favorite part about my job is spending time with clients. I enjoy engaging with them and learning about their business and how Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa can meet or exceed the objectives they’re looking for in a property.
Tenure has its rewards. Ten-year employee Andrew Reh moved into the chief operating offi cer and general manager role at Shanty Creek Resorts in Bellaire last fall. He worked through the ranks as director of food and beverage, executive chef and vice president of resort services before taking over the top spot.
