Here’s some good news for planners. With the list of quality craft breweries gaining a foothold in Michigan expanding every month, we’re discovering that many of them are fun places to host meetings and events. And their award-winning brews provide greater name recognition and a better draw for events business.

Michigan Brewers Guild members won big at the 2018 World Beer Cup competition, considered one of the industry’s top events in the world. Together, our Great Lakes brewers captured 10 medals at the Nashville, Tenn. challenge.

This year’s battle for best beer featured 295 judges grading 8,234 different beers from more than 50 countries. It was the largest field of entries since the Brewers Association’s competition for small and independent craft brewers started in 1996.

Michigan brewers received four gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

The gold medal winners were:

  • New Holland Brewing Co., Holland, for Pilgrim's Dole in the Old Ale or Strong Ale category (47 entries).
  • Silver Harbor Brewing Co., St. Joseph, for Shipfaced in the Barley Wine-Style Ale category (79 entries).
  • Territorial Brewing Co., Springfield, for BC Light in Light Lager (72 entries).
  • Tilted Axis Brewing Co., Lapeer, for Dark O' The Moon in American-Style Wheat Beer (53 entries).

Earning silver honors were:

  • American Harvest Brew Pub at Schoolcraft College, Livonia, for American Harvest Kolsch in the German-Style Koelsch category (125 entries).
  • Griffin Claw Brewing Co., Birmingham, for Oblivous in Aged Beer (45 entries).
  • Speciation Artisan Ales, Comstock Park for Genetic Drift with peaches in Brett Beer (58 entries).

Capturing bronze medals were:

  • Arbor Brewing Co., Ypsilanti, for Faricy's Irish Stout in the Classic Irish-Style Dry Stout category (64 entries).
  • Bastone Brewery, Royal Oak, for The Roman Wolf in Belgian- and French-Style Ale (34 entries).
  • Black Lotus Brewing Co., Clawson for Ninja Pirate Barleywine in Old Ale or Strong Ale (47 entries).

The awards were divided into 101 categories of traditional beer styles. Gold, silver and bronze were awarded in each category. This year, 302 of the 303 total awards were presented because no gold medal was awarded in the International Style Pilsener category.
