The charming cities of Novi and Northville combine historic appeal with a dedication to being modern destinations for meetings and events. Easily accessible off I-275 and I-96 and located just 20 minutes from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Novi and the Victorianesque city of Northville offer an extensive range of venues and excellent amenities. ¶ “Novi and Northville are metro Detroit’s newest suburban hot spots,” says Deanna Majchrzak, manager of media relations at the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau. “With increased dining, entertainment and venue options, it’s a convenient location for major companies headquartered in the area.”

Distinctive Venues

Groups big and small can find what they need at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, which offers more than 300,000 square feet of space and boasts 32 meeting, exposition and banquet rooms, including its Diamond Ballroom, which can hold up to 2,200 people. Everything is accessible on one floor from the corridor, so guests needn’t worry about using stairs or elevators to get to where they need to be.

“We are able to accommodate up to 6,000 people for a general session [in the expo halls] and up to 29 breakout rooms for your conference,” says Mary Jane Scott, the venue’s vice president of sales and marketing. “Our food and beverage is all prepared fresh—not frozen— and our on-site pastry chef prepares all of our pastries and baked goods from scratch every day.”

Connected to the Suburban Collection Showplace is the 126-room Hyatt Place Detroit/Novi, which offers a complimentary breakfast buffet daily as well as free parking and free Wi-Fi.

For planners looking to have some fun with their event, there’s Lucky Strike Novi, a combination of bowling lanes, billiards, restaurant and nightclub. Lucky Strike offers more than 76,000 square feet of space (including a semiprivate area able to accommodate up to 150 guests), and can host 1,800 people.

“Lucky Strike is so much more than just a bowling alley,” says Kirsten Carpenter, Lucky Strike Entertainment’s national sales director. “We offer a one-of-a-kind mix of high-end bowling, mouthwatering food and handcrafted cocktails, in addition to over 100 arcade games. Hosting meetings in our unique, nontraditional venue allows clients to let loose and promotes a positive bonding, team-building experience.”

Chocolates by Renee in Northville also offers planners a sweet team-bonding experience, as guests can make their own delicious treats inside the gourmet handmade chocolates shop. With the ability to accommodate up to 30 people, parties are customized for each group. “We meet with the event planner and find things that are unique to that group,” says Chocolates by Renee owner Stephanie Acho-Tartoni. “We can custom-tailor products that will make their meeting memorable and desirable.”

Acho-Tartoni says that she’s also willing to travel to an event, should planners wish to incorporate a candy-making session into their activities. Personalized treats can also be made for a group or event.

Local favorite Genitti’s Hole-in-the-Wall in Northville serves up a memorable experience, with dinner and lunch theater productions available. The long-running banquet facility, which serves Italian food, can host up to 250 guests on both floors, with private rooms that can accommodate up to 150 guests.

“Having been a family-owned business for over 40 years, we really try hard to make our customers feel like a part of that family,” says Manager Laura Genitti. “We like to think of ourselves as all-inclusive. If we have it and it will help complete the event, it’s all yours!”

Hospitable Hotels

The recently renovated Sheraton Detroit Novi Hotel can accommodate up to 500 guests and features 17 meeting rooms and 238 hotel rooms. Staff at the property—the largest fullservice hotel in the area—goes out of its way to make sure each event is memorable.

“Once we had an Indian wedding requesting for the groom to be brought in by a horse from the parking lot,” says Holly Sabbagh, the hotel’s assistant director of sales. “We made it happen.”

The Baronette Renaissance Detroit-Novi offers more than 8,000 square feet of versatile event space—including its newly renovated Grand Oak Ballroom, which showcases artwork that speaks to Michigan’s automotive and music history in its glass prefunction room. The elegant hotel is capable of serving up to 300 people and has 149 hotel rooms and six suites.

One of the property’s amenities is its Navigator service, provided by dedicated personnel who, according to Sora Chan, the hotel’s director of sales, “select the best local places to savor, sip, shop and see that will transform any event or meeting into an inspiring journey of discovery.” Not that meeting or event attendees need to leave the hotel for an unforgettable meal; the property’s award-winning executive chef, Brian Kanak, was named 2015 Chef of the Year by edibleWOW magazine.

Idyllic Spaces

For planners looking to take guests outside, there’s Northville’s Mill Race Historical Village, a site created in 1972 for historic buildings slated for demolition. The village’s grounds can hold up to 500 people. Planners also can host events at the village’s 150-yearold Cady Inn, which can accommodate 60 people for a sit-down meal or up to 100 people for a mingling event, or the New School Church, which can hold up to 100 people. (For larger events on the grounds, port-o-johns need to be rented.)

Northville’s Maybury Farm is available for group picnics late April through October. The working educational farm features an expansive picnic area with tables that can seat approximately 100 people; if additional tables, chairs and/or tents are brought in, the grassy area can accommodate several hundred people. Although banquet and catering services are not available, guests are welcome to bring in their own food and drinks (alcohol excluded). Tours and bonfires can also be booked upon request, and guests are welcome to pet the farm’s many animals.

Exploring Your Surroundings

Whatever venue you decide on for your event, be sure to give your guests plenty of time to explore the area around them. Novi and Northville are home to several mustsee spots, like the Dancing Eye Gallery in downtown Northville, which specializes in unique handmade gifts from all over the state, including decorative tiles, metal work, jewelry and prints.

Downtown Northville is also home to one of the best coffee shops in metro Detroit, Tuscan Cafe, which serves high-quality, locally roasted coffee, cappuccinos and lattes using Northville’s own Guernsey Farms Dairy milk. Free Wi-Fi is available, too, making it the perfect spot to catch up on emails between meetings and conferences.

Of course, no trip to the area would be complete without visiting Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, which features nearly 200 stores plus Nordstrom, Macy’s, Sears, JCPenney and Lord and Taylor. The popular shopping center also offers numerous dining options, including Michigan’s only Cheesecake Factory.

Nature, golf, skiing, rails-to-trails, location and more combine to make this Alpine Village an up north gem.

What do you think of when someone says Michigan? Well, maybe you think of the Great Lakes – the state is on the shores of Michigan, Huron, and Erie. Or perhaps it’s the Motor City, Detroit, or a number of the states’ other vibrant metropolises. Or is it just getting out onto the open road and discovering some of the Midwest’s most beautiful scenery?

Sandy Lake Michigan beaches, walkable downtowns and great meeting spaces make these cities a Dutch treat.
