The 2017 Governor’s Awards for Innovative Tourism Collaboration Selects Category Winners

Created by the Michigan Travel Commission in conjunction with the Governor’s Office, The Governor’s Awards for Innovative Tourism Collaboration elevate the status of Michigan’s tourism industry and promote innovative collaboration as an effective, efficient and creative operating principle for the industry. In April, at the Pure Michigan Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Detroit, Dave Lorenz of Travel Michigan, representing the Michigan Travel Commission, and Julie Pingston, representing the Tourism Industry Coalition of Michigan (TICOM), presented the 2017 awards.

Well, another fantastic Best of Michigan Awards party has come and gone. Every year, I think we’ve topped ourselves, though, really, each year’s celebration is wonderful in its unique way.

This year we took the party to Traverse City, a much-needed visit by the magazine’s readers and supporters to the region that has done so much to lure tourism to Michigan. The local meeting and events industry folks bent over backwards to make the experience exceptional. We spread out over two venues—the City Opera House and the Hotel Indigo—and enjoyed wonderful hospitality wherever we were.

Traverse City Uncorked: A Month-Long Celebration of Local Wines

This May, a new month-long series of wine-related events called “Traverse City Uncorked” will be held throughout the Traverse City area. The event is a collaboration between Traverse City Tourism, the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail and the Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula. It will showcase Traverse City’s burgeoning wine and cuisine scene while also featuring specials at participating venues throughout the region.

Signature Drink: Spiced Maple Manhattan

The Spiced Maple Manhattan hails from Traverse City’s new Hotel Indigo. Make it at home yourself or sample it this spring at the Indigo rooftop gathering following our 12th annual Best of Michigan readers’ choice awards.

—1 cherry
—1 orange slice
—1.5 T Vanilla Cinnamon Maple Simple Syrup (see below)
—2 oz. Traverse City Cherry Whiskey
—1 T sweet vermouth
—1 cinnamon stick for garnish
